Low-carb, keto, and carnivore advocates are doing a dance right now…
But I’m afraid I’m gonna have to poop on their parade.
Here’s why they’re celebrating…
A study recently released in the journal of Nutrition Reviews provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of random-controlled trials on inflammation and ketogenic diets.
Based on the Conclusion…
“...Adherence to a KD appears to improve some markers associated with inflammation…”
Well…
How…about…that?
It’s case closed for the rest of us, right?
I guess I better switch to eating cowboy ribeyes, olive oil-soaked Caesar salads, and a 16oz cup of MCT oil-infused black coffee with butter slowly melting in the center…
(Shrugs!)
While they see this as a win…
It’s only for the short term because it opens the door to problems later on.
Case in point…
After a short search, I found a study that also follows keto dieters, but wasn’t nearly as positive about it based on the title…
“Going Keto? Say βHB-ye Bye to Your Gut Bifidobacteria”
From the abstract…
“Ketogenic diets (KDs) are popularly used to aid a myriad of conditions. KDs induce metabolic changes, but how microbiome alterations contribute to these changes remains unexplored. In a recent Cell paper, Ang et al. identify KD-specific changes to the gut microbiota linked to a reduction in pro-inflammatory Th17 cells.”
So what? Someone might ask why bifidobacteria matter.
Well, it does a few things…
>> Digest complex carbs
>> Control hunger cravings
>> Produce B vitamins and healthy fatty acids
>> Prevent infections from E. coli
>> Producing chemicals to prevent toxins from passing into the blood
But all those benefits eventually get crushed, just like the bifidobacteria in the guts of those eating a fat-heavy ketogenic diet.
Now, a keto-guru could easily come back and say something like…
“We don’t need to worry about digesting complex carbs because we don’t eat them and if we’re hungry, we’re not afraid to eat another steak. B vitamins and fatty acids? We can eat or supplement to get those benefits!”
That “might” all be true…
But as I said earlier, they cannot deny what I’d call the “real” inflammation they’re setting themselves up for down the line…
This is where their lack of bifidobacteria will be a problem…
Specifically, keeping toxins from passing through the colon and into your bloodstream.
The paper Ketogenic diet aggravates colitis, impairs intestinal barrier and alters gut microbiota and metabolism in DSS-induced mice, says…
“Ketogenic diet substantially worsened colitis, in terms of higher body weight loss, DAI scores and histological scores as well as colon length shortening. Levels of serum and colon inflammatory cytokines and chemokines (IL-1α, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-17, GM-CSF and IL-10) were significantly up-regulated in mice treated with ketogenic diet and DSS. Increased intestinal permeability and decreased expressions of intestinal epithelial barrier associated genes were observed due to ketogenic diet administration…These results suggest that ketogenic diet aggravates DSS-induced colitis in mice by increasing intestinal and systemic inflammation, and disrupting the intestinal barrier, which results from modulated gut microbiota and metabolism.”
That last sentence really sums it up nicely, doesn’t it?
Now, what does this mean for you?
Well…
>> More gas
>> More bloating
>> More cramping
>> Fear of drinking or eating certain foods due to loss of bowel control
…And possibly the one thing most low-carb, keto dieters and others never expect…
The stalling of their high-fat, low-carb weight loss.
And unfortunately, it’s only when they stop losing weight as easily as they used to, is when they start asking questions.
So, what options do recovering keto diets have?
Well, stop eating so much added fat.
Notice I didn’t say “all fat.”
Eating fat is pretty normal, especially red meat like beef, bison, lamb, etc.
Just go with leaner cuts like tenderloin versus chowing down on the ribeyes, and minimize ADDED fats like oils and butter.
